Monarch Tagging: Season Three

Never underestimate the value of being present to watch the sun rise at the Saint Marks National Wildlife Refuge… it will encourage you to fulfill your dreams.

This is the third year of my involvement in the Fall Migration tagging of the Monarch Butterfly.

Roughly forty-five minutes south of Tallahassee, is the entrance to this gorgeous gem of the Earth. The gate opens at 6am, before the sun comes up, and this is when the weight of the refuge is first felt.

Three years in a row now, my mother and I take will this drive to meet with a biologist from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and his team to assist with the capturing, tagging, and releasing the gentle monarch butterflies on their way to Mexico.

The grand total is in for the season: 857 counted, 810 tagged!
